Most importantly, Crytoon’s name comes from the in-universe rubber hose cartoon of the same name. For now, Crytoon’s tears are not only their emotional calling card, but possibly the result of over exposure to ether. Crytoon is a stylized murderer with obelisk black skin, an inky black suit, and psychotic tears running down his face.

Rafael uses stylized segments of black and white to underscore the inner thoughts of both Batman and the major antagonist.īatman spends much of this first issue tracking down a crazed serial killer named “Crytoon.” Although it begins with Batman liberating slaves from a “TNT lab,” the real surrounds the fiend behind it. Secondly, the use of dark inks and shadows gives the book a ominous tone. For one, Batman’s costume has an alien-like cowl and gauntlets, with a leathery cape resembling a thick animal hide. Most of the character designs straddle a line between hyperrealism and cartoonish caricatures. Firstly, the immediate detail, texture, and washed out paper look of the rendering are strong identifying standouts. The key component of Gargoyle of Gotham is the tone of its artwork. For instance, wealthy shoppers literally step over beggars as a visual aid for the “rot” of society. Sadly, this disparity in the troubling setting is overt and lacks subtlety. Below, Rafael illustrates corruption and poverty with sex shops, drug use, violence, homelessness, and even slavery. Even still, the gnawing presence of macabre scribbles and erratic graffiti creates an unsettling atmosphere. Advertisements, hotels, and gargantuan but saintly statues characterize its skyline with exaggerated prestige.
Rafael’s worrying vision of Gotham depicts a city slowly decaying into madness. However, as Batman uncover the darkness of the city, he begins to exposes the darkness within himself. In Gargoyle of Gotham, Batman faces two equally creepy serial killers in a corrupt city.

Will the core values of these characters shine through, or is their little corner of the multiverse too divergent from our own to produce the hero/villain that we all know and love/hate? Batman: Gotham by Gaslight does this effectively and uses what we think we know about certain characters to construct a fully realized mystery.īatman: Gotham by Gaslight will be available by Digital Download on January 23rd and on DVD and Blu-ray on February 6th.Eisner award-winning writer and artist Rafael Grampá drags readers into a scrappy thriller set within a new kind of Gotham. Plot twists and surprises emerge when we realize that, though these characters share a name and costume as their mainstream counterparts, the influences and environment that shaped them are radically different.
It is this understanding that lulls the reader into a false sense of security. Well-known heroes and villains appear in times and settings antithetical to our basic understanding of them. A good Elseworlds story is a study of nature vs. Most importantly, I believe this film is worthy of the "Elseworlds" moniker, maybe even more so than the source comic.
Timm's capable hands, citing the desire to see the film with fresh eyes. Executive Producer Bruce Timm even reached out to Mike Mignola, the graphic novel's original artist, to design these extra characters. In the source material, the small cast of characters narrowed the possible identities of Jack the Ripper and turned what should have been a "whodunit" into a "whoofthesethreecharactersdunit." While this film improved upon the source, it did so in a respectful, constructive manner. This broader cast of characters allows for a much richer mystery. This film fleshes out the world of the graphic novel to include a swath of Batman's allies and rogues gallery absent from the original graphic novel, including Dr. Rather than faithfully reproducing every story beat like The Dark Knight Returns or slapping on a superfluous second story on to the main plot (I'm looking at you, The Killing Joke), Gotham by Gaslight instead takes the kernel of the idea of Victorian Batman pursuing Jack the Ripper and lets it blossom. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight takes a markedly different approach in converting its 64 pages of source material into a feature-length film.
